You spotted an Instagram account and its profile picture intrigues you, but it’s impossible to distinguish anything in that tiny circle. On the app, there’s no button to enlarge this thumbnail. The problem comes from a technical limitation imposed by Instagram, which displays avatars in a very reduced format.
Square format, circular display: what the Instagram thumbnail hides
Before trying to enlarge anything, one detail deserves your attention. The Instagram profile picture is stored as a square image cropped into a circle. The native format is 1:1, meaning that the four corners of the square are masked by the circular frame of the interface.

In the code, look for a URL that contains “profile_pic” or ends with an image format (.jpg). This URL points to the full-resolution version of the profile picture. Copy it, paste it into a new tab, and the image will display in full size.
This technique works because Instagram stores multiple versions of each profile picture. The displayed thumbnail is compressed, but the server keeps a higher quality file.
Limitations of this approach
If the profile is private, the source code will only reveal a low-resolution thumbnail. Instagram protects the content of private accounts, including the profile picture in its largest dimensions. For public accounts, this method remains the most straightforward.

Don’t want to sift through HTML code? Several websites perform this function in seconds. Their principle is the same: they query Instagram’s servers to retrieve the profile picture in its best available resolution.
Here’s what to check before using one of these tools:
- No login to your Instagram account should be required. If a site asks for your credentials, leave it immediately. Legitimate tools work only with the username of the target profile.
- The site should display the image directly in the browser, without forced downloads or redirects to an ad page.
